Hello all !! I'm undergoing a full body off restoration on my '66. Over the weekend I started to clean the underside . I got almost all the 35 year old grime off but I came across a bit of a problem. There is some kind of black paint on the floor and I was woundering what would take this off without hurting the fiberglass?? Thank you in advanced.
What you're describing sounds like undercoating, the bane of restorers. I describe it as such because there are no easy ways to remove it and removal is both time consuming and very messy.
There are several methods of removal. One of the easiest is to brush or spray the undercoating with mineral spirits (yes, the same stuff you buy to clean paint brushes. it's usually on the same shelf as paint thinner) to loosen and soften it, then scrape it off. This will get the bulk of the material off and then use standard degreasers to finish up.
Remember, this stuff was sprayed on 36 years ago, so it's hardened like a lawyer's heart.
Now tell us about the 66! Coupe? Colour?? Motor???
Mac gives good advice. That is what I used in addition to carb cleaner. Use a scotchbrite pad to scrub it a little when you get down to the fiberglass. I only re-applied undercoat to the fender peaks. I then used John Deere Blitz Black to recoat the wheel wells. Looks very nice after about 20 hours of very nasty work.
Hi Mac and Bryan Lee thanks for the advice I will try it and I will let you guys know ! As for the '66 its a silver coupe ( 2 owner). auto, ps, pb, pw, pa, tint, telescopic and teak, leather, cc group ,knock offs and side pipes (add-on, too me it just dont look right without them ) black leather, hazard lights, 300hp all #s match.
