Default Do I have a correct engine?

I'm trying to find out if my 64 vert has the correct engine. I know it's not the original engine. The engine block pad numbers are: 8120606 F07I7RD.
The decals on the valve covers say 327/300 hp and it has a four-speed tranny.
Can anyone help?

MF64VETTE,

F0717RD is the critical number, F meaning is was cast in the Flint, MI plant, assembly date of July 17th, and RD being interpreted as a 327, 300hp motor out of a 62-64 Vette, 4 bolt main and manual tranny.

You will have to look at the cast date to determine what year model it is in.

I don't think any small block midyears came from the factory with four bolt mains.

'69 was the first year for 4-bolt mains and you can't determine from the casting number with any certainty that any engine will have 4-bolt mains. You can make an assumption from the deck code, but that would only apply to engines that are widely recognized based upon the application, such as truck installations, that it may be universally so.

The casting number of the block is located on the drivers side bellhousing flange. For 64, it should be an "870" (last 3 digits). (3782870) The casting date is located on the passengers side....bellhousing flange, up near the back of the distributor. It will be something like "F114" = June 11, 1964. A=January, B=Feburary, and so on. Flint blocks (correct for Corvette) have the "single digit year date". Tonawanda blocks have a "double digit" year date. So....a Tonawanda block would read "F1164"=June 11, 1964.

The F0717RD is the assembly date and suffix. F (Flint) 07 (July) 17 (the day) RD is the code for 327/300 HP with manual trans.

The 8120606 is funky. Usually the first digit indicated the year "8", 1 is Chevrolet, and the 20606 is the sequential VIN derivitive for the car it was installed in. So, I would GUESS that this was installed in a 68 something, with 20606 being the last 5 digits of the original VIN number. Hope this helps. The VIN of your 64 should be something like 40867S1XXXXX. Chuck
