Do they still have armadillo hunts? When I lived in Mineral Wells ("Min'l Wayles") in '62-'63, that was terrific almost-weekly entertainment when the critters would get to rootin' up some farmer's crops; nuthin' like 50 or 100 guys runnin' loose with a couple million rounds of ammo. Got to be so much fun I finally purpose-built an "armadillo gun" ('03 Springfield 30-06 action, Douglas button-rifled short barrel, glass-bedded into a Fajen stock, firing hand-loaded cartridges with 48 grains of 4227 and little Speer 90-grain "plinker" bullets; 4250 feet per second muzzle velocity - didn't matter where you hit 'em! :D Don't tell me they've become a "protected species"
:jester
Almost any native Texas species is now protected by game laws unless they are a recognized game animal with established bag limits or in the nuisance category. Now, javelina, I am not sure which category they fall into...to my knowledge there are no game rules for javelina, but the naive hunter only kills one once and will probably leave it for the buzzards if he is smart. :D
Since you were here, Armadillos have become a loveable, cult icon. I am not sure why, since Armadillos are naturally shy of people, have long digging spades for nails, and a face only a mother could love. Forget about getting close enough to cuddle one if you were so inclined. I figure the only place any of these city-dwelling armadillo lovers have actually seen one was in the zoo or as road kill. I have seen one in the wild but only as a rear quarter, heading south at a high rate of speed, and he was making hole as he went. :D
On that "armadillo gun", John...with that set up, you would probably be set for almost any wildlife except for very large game species like in Alaska (or Canajunland). It sounds especially good for medium sized, thin-skinned mammals at very long ranges...like back there in Beirut. :D :D

Fish is a fish, right?
Are they edible?
Let the fishermen catch them
Why not drain the ponds?
You start poisoning the waterways, it's gonna have a domino affect.
Where's the common sense?

Apparently they are edible. The Chinese apparently make a medicinal soup..."Snakehead Soup" from the critters.
BTW....today...Sunday AM....they put the herbicide into the ponds. They will put in the fish poison later...how much later???....don't know. I'm amazed that they have actually done something. I expected pickets and PETA representatives. Chuck
