Default Maryland Snakehead fish update.....

Man, this ticks me off, why do these bureaucrats make such a BF deal of killing a few fish which could significantly upset the ecological balance of the indigenous aquatic species? They still haven't got the job done and it's going to be a couple weeks at least before they finish it.........if they don't botch it up the first time. The Washington area has to be the red tape capital of the world.

Good God almightly, you would think they were trying to defuse an atomic bomb!!!!!! :cuss :cuss

Investigators traced the origin of the fish to a local man who had ordered them from an Asian fish market in New York to make soup for his ailing sister. Though releasing a nonnative animal is a crime, the man was not charged because the statute of limitations had lapsed.
How about they give his name and address to the local sportsmen so they can beat the hell outta that stupid mother? Whoops, never mind. Apparently it's not a crime to be stupid.

The "selected" weekend has arrived. :) Here in Merryland, the announcement has been made that the infamous pond will be poisoned sometime "early Sunday morning". Supposedly, they're putting a vegitation killer in first. Then, when all the plants are dead, they're putting in the special "fish" poison. I believe it's called "Rotolone". There are also 2 other nearby ponds that they are not poisoning. The owner wouldn't give his permission. Don't know what gives with that. So...how many weeks has this taken? It's amazing to see how things work living in Maryland, the "Red Tape State". :) Chuck

Hvn, yer beginnin' to sound decidedly Texan...I had thought that exact same sentiment myself. Are you sure yer parents didn't immigrate to Canajunland from Texas? :D :D

Chuck -

Do they still have armadillo hunts? When I lived in Mineral Wells ("Min'l Wayles") in '62-'63, that was terrific almost-weekly entertainment when the critters would get to rootin' up some farmer's crops; nuthin' like 50 or 100 guys runnin' loose with a couple million rounds of ammo. Got to be so much fun I finally purpose-built an "armadillo gun" ('03 Springfield 30-06 action, Douglas button-rifled short barrel, glass-bedded into a Fajen stock, firing hand-loaded cartridges with 48 grains of 4227 and little Speer 90-grain "plinker" bullets; 4250 feet per second muzzle velocity - didn't matter where you hit 'em! :D Don't tell me they've become a "protected species"

Doubtful on the armadillo hunts. Maybe on private ranches if they are still a problem. Now, rattlesnakes...they receive no quarter out here in the western part of the state.

Almost any native Texas species is now protected by game laws unless they are a recognized game animal with established bag limits or in the nuisance category. Now, javelina, I am not sure which category they fall into...to my knowledge there are no game rules for javelina, but the naive hunter only kills one once and will probably leave it for the buzzards if he is smart. :D

Since you were here, Armadillos have become a loveable, cult icon. I am not sure why, since Armadillos are naturally shy of people, have long digging spades for nails, and a face only a mother could love. Forget about getting close enough to cuddle one if you were so inclined. I figure the only place any of these city-dwelling armadillo lovers have actually seen one was in the zoo or as road kill. I have seen one in the wild but only as a rear quarter, heading south at a high rate of speed, and he was making hole as he went. :D

On that "armadillo gun", John...with that set up, you would probably be set for almost any wildlife except for very large game species like in Alaska (or Canajunland). It sounds especially good for medium sized, thin-skinned mammals at very long ranges...like back there in Beirut. :D :D

What's the bid deal with these fish? Why do they make a big stink about exterminating them?

Fish is a fish, right?

Are they edible?

Let the fishermen catch them

Why not drain the ponds?

You start poisoning the waterways, it's gonna have a domino affect.

Where's the common sense?

The problem with the fish is that they're an "alien" species, native to the Yangtsee (sp?) River in China. EAT everything and eliminate the native species. We live in a maritime state....ton's of rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, etc. Fishing and crabbing are HUGE industries. These fish can and will supposedly eliminate all the native "stuff"....no more Rockfish, Bluefish, etc., no more Blue Crabs, etc. They are a menace to the local ecology. Imagine the same thing in Lake Erie...up your way.

Apparently they are edible. The Chinese apparently make a medicinal soup..."Snakehead Soup" from the critters.

BTW....today...Sunday AM....they put the herbicide into the ponds. They will put in the fish poison later...how much later???....don't know. I'm amazed that they have actually done something. I expected pickets and PETA representatives. Chuck
