where would one find the size for the screw that holds the rearview mirror in place on an 87 cpe?

If it were me, Larry, I would just buy the replacement screw from your Chevy dealer or one to the Corvette vendors. It would be pretty easy to get the thread right, but then it may have some special features like a counter-sink, crown head or an odd-ball length that Home Depot doesn't stock (try to buy a machine screw 7/16" length) .

If your Chevy dealer doesn't have the screw or can order it for you, then check with the big catalog vendors, or The Last Detail.
