Default Midyear Frame Pull Date

What can be used to apply the so called handwritten frame pull date on a mid year. I cannot find any white lumber crayons in my area. I have tried home depot and three other hardware stores one of which was also a lumber yard. One person told me they dont even make white lumber crayons.

thanks

Quanta Products has chassis restoration kits with EVERYTHING you need to make the paint and crayon marks, but I can guarantee that you won't like the price if you are looking for a crayon. http://quantaproducts.com/paint/paintindex.html

Chuck

That is exactly why I posted it here. I am not so sure that it has to be a "white" crayon. The Michael Antonick book shows an original 65 with yellow/orange. I would think whoever put the date on used whatever they had in their pocket or in close range.

I am going to look in a craft store like Michaels or AC Moore for a grease pencil or china marker or maybe even a box of Crayola crayons.

How does that sound ??

thanks

If you are pretty sure it has not been restored previously, i.e. that it is original, then if it were me, I would forget Antonick's book and put it back like it was originally. The supervisors/inspectors probably intended the crayon to be a certain color for identification purposes, but if they ran out of that color, they weren't going to shut the line down until a new shipment of crayons came in.

John, I am pretty sure that Crayola crayons are not going to "stick" to the frame paint and leave a good thick transfer like the original crayon. You can try it , but I am doubtful. The problem with grease pencil or china marker in white (do they exist?) is the relatively small diameter compared to the original "lumber crayons". They may work if you can cut an angle on the point to get a mark as wide as a lumber crayon.

Edit: John, forget that stuff above...I just checked Quanta's website, and they sell the individual markers. The white marker is their Part No. 0301, and the price if $5.00. Order it; it will be closest to the original marker. You can get a set of six different colors for $25.00. Reasonable enough for me.

Chiuck

Thanks for the response and the research. I was able to find a white china marker today. I have cut it on an angle and am going to give it a try. If that doesnt work, I will be calling Quanta. That is where I got the chassis stencil and ink.

thanks

Well, I used the white china marker cut on an angle and it worked fine. Before I did it I compared the width of the china marker to a yellow lumber crayon I had and both the width and texture were the same. Being left handed it was real easy to write the date upside down.

Now its back to finishing up fixing the exhaust leak at the heat riser which is really what started this project. And wow -- were there some surprises when I removed the side pipes and old heat riser !!! However that is a whole 'nother story.

thanks for all the input
