My plan is to take my 15x8 ralley wheels off my vette and put them on my Monte Carlo (it currently has 7" wheels). When the car show comes to town in November, I was planning on getting an entire new set of 15 x 8's at teh Houston Autorama. They are about $250 set w/trim rings and center caps.
I fiigured I would get new perfectly round wheels (possibly dinged after 33 years of service) and all is good. What makes me hesitant is that someone mentioned that "THOSE AREN"T ORIGINAL WHEELS"... Does it really matter???? I am not a purist, but I don't deviate from stock too much and I certainly don't want inferior product on my car...
I don't know specifically about the deal you are talking about, but it's possible that those are brand new replacement wheels made by Kelsey Hayes (the original supplier). I bought one from a Corvette vendor years ago for $50.
If the wheels are Kelsey wheels, then they will be identical to the originals in all respects except that the dates near the valve stem hole will be fairly recent. It won't matter for your purposes, and the trim rings cover the dates anyway. They will come in basic black, and will have to be painted. For that price, expect the caps to be plastic repros (they look fine) and the trim rings to be the multi-fingered stainless imports which may vary slightly in profile from the original Corvette rings.
What show is coming to Houston, and which weekend in November? It will be held over at George Brown Convention Center I presume?
This is correct ,the original supplier is still making these wheels .They moved production to mexico last year but the quality hasnt changed any. They still have the AZ code on then m but I am not sure if they have a date code on them at all.I have seen them as low as $40 each. :yesnod:
Since you are not concerned with date codes, it does not matter. Either a good reproduction, which you can get from any corvette supply house (Paragon, Ecklers, etc.) or an undated tire from the original manufacturer, as suggested by others would be a great choice.
