Default car doliies

Saw some car dollies at Carlisle today and learned there are many different qualities. Anybody try them and any recommendations?

Are you talking about the little guys under each tire or the large ones for a body-off project?

I have seen them in all price ranges, but the cheap ones from Harbor Freight are hard to beat! they have steel wheels, are very sturdy and the price is right! I have 2 sets of them and have been very happy with them.

I have a set I've had for years from P&J Products ( http://www.carskates.com ) - $145.00/set, ball-bearing casters with hard polymer wheels (don't scar up the floor, easy to roll around).

I have the Harborfreight dollies. They were very inexpensive - I got them on sale - forget exactly how much. BUT, mine are pretty hard to maneuver. Sometimes I have to reach underneath and turn the wheels with a wrench to get them going in the right direction. I have at times wished that I had spent a bit more money for something that would let me glide the vette around the garage with one finger! :) MJ

Are these things really a worthwhile investiment? I've never bothered with them, I just pushed the car around or (if possible) fired her up.

The "CarSkates" dollies literally let you move the car around with no more than hand pressure; handy in the winter if you're short on space and don't want to open the garage doors to move the car or just fire the engine for a minute or two, or if the car is not in a condition to start it. The caster bearings and wheels make the difference between all the brands out there.

I agree with John on the dollies. It makes it really easy to store cars really tight together in the winter so you have room to work. You can even rotate your cars so they sit sideways and use space more efficiently. I have not had any problems with the casters on the Harbor frieght dollies, but I will be changing the casters out to urethane wheeled casters this winter when I put an epoxy floor down. The steel wheels roll very nice on smooth concrete, but I am sure that they will mark up an epoxy floor. The really neat ones are the ones that will jack up the car and then let it roll arround, but I just haven't seen clear to spend that kind of money yet.
