Default proper decal placement

I am in the process of buying a very low mileage C3 pace car. I noticed that the decals seem to be incorrectly placed on the door. Most have the entire decal above the break over except for the date decal then the last line is below the break of the door. This one has only the red above the line and the rest is below. Is there a standard to where the decals should be placed? I have never seen any other pace car with the decals where they are at on this car. This car has been indoors for the majority of it’s life. I wonder if the paint would be different under the decals? I like the logos, but I’d like to put them in the correct spot. Or should i just leave sleeping dogs lie?

The Decals were installed at the Dealer or the factory in some cases by the owner. So some one could have installed it incorrectly. The original at the track pace cars had the Official Pace Car above the center line of the door.

Pace Cars were shipped from the factory without the "Official Pace Car" decals installed, giving the buyer the option to have them installed, or leave them off. The only factory installed decals on the Pace Cars were the red stripes, and the "Limited Edition" under the fender flags. The Official Pace Car door decals and the quarter panel Indianapolis Speedway "winged" logo, came uninstalled in a tube, with instructions on where and how to install them.

The black "MAY 28, 1978" date decal was installed on the silver, below the red stripe. The red "Official Pace Car" and the white "62nd Annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race" went on the doors above the red stripe.

The paint shouldn't be different under the decals, but there's always the possibility that the paint has faded slightly (even with black). There's also a slight chance the surface of the paint could look a little different, under the decals, compared to the other painted areas, that have been through years of washing and waxing.

If you want to remove and reposition your Pace Car door decals, you'll need to order a new set of reproduction door decals. You won't be able to reuse your original ones. Phoenix Graffix reproduces the door decals, and I think they include an instruction sheet showing how to install and position them.

I had lost track of this thread so picking this back up. "The black "MAY 28, 1978" date decal was installed on the silver, below the red stripe. The red "Official Pace Car" and the white "62nd Annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race" went on the doors above the red stripe". On my car all the text is in the black including the date. I have one spare decal and can buy another. I may have to polish the paint if things are a different color. I have no idea when these decals were put on. This is the only car I have ever seen with the decals where they are.

So there are no measurements for where to the decals should be?

As I said in my previous post above, Chevrolet did supply installation instructions with the "Office Pace Car" labels. The instructions came rolled up in a tube with the labels. I have never seen a copy of the instructions, so I don't know what they cover, but I know they existed.

Have you talked to Phoenix Graphix, the company the reproduces the Pace Car labels. They include instructions with their Pace Car kit, but I don't know if they cover placement of them, or just basic instructions on how to install them. You could also post a question here in the C3 General Section of the Forum, to ask if anyone has a copy of the original Chevrolet instruction sheet. You may have better luck in the General section because there's a lot more traffic and viewers in there than in this section.
