Does anyone know what the black goopy (its hard now) sealant is used to double seal the seam where the evap box meets the firewall? Rebuild kits come with the ribon sealant, but there was also a black wax/tar like sealant that was applied after the box was installed .... excess ran down the side of the box as well...????
The ribbon stuff is called butyl tape,it never realy dries. The stuff they put on afterwards is also butyl based but is a thinner product.I have heard that some people use regular roofing tar to copy that look and it is supposed to be similar to what they used originally. :seeya
I believe the black goop was actually sprayed/squirted on, not only at the heater box but in a couple different spots. There was a thread about this stuff a long time ago but I can't remember the details exactly. I believe there was a Eastwood product that produced same effect (maybe?) but hopefully our experts will come up with a better answer.
...roofing tar is a very good discription of what it looks like... I believe it is also used arround the wiper compartment to seal the various seams and the wiper arm bases to the body. ... I'll look at the Eastwood products, but it sure would be nice to hear it anyone has found and used any other products for this application.
Hey, also I have a 74 in my shop right now that someone has put that goop in the wiper area.It looks horrible. There was some in that area from the factory but this stuff is so thick in there you cant tell where any bolts are or anything. So I was just going to suggest that when you do it dont go overboard. :seeya
I believe it was John Z who reported that goop was applied hot from a gun to ensure there were no leaks after everything was installed. Someone had used the aftermarket product and posted pictures of the results which looked very correct (ie: horrid) but I can't remember who it was or if it was an Eastwood product for sure.
A buddy of mine says human memory is limited so at about 40 years, your memory is full. Anything you learn after that has to push something else out but you don't get to choose what, so it could be an early childhood memory or your wife's birthday. So if someone gets cross at you for forgetting your wedding anniversary, explain this theory and ask her to simplify your life so you don't have to learn as much.
... I looked on the Eastwood site and found something in the body pannel sealer section.... I think is brand name is "Sureathane"... advertised to dry in 2 min ... its black.. and sandable... and takes paint! Sounds too good! Anybody had any luck with this stuff...?
That stuff was a fairly thin vinyl plastisol-based air-dry sealer, and was applied with a small airless spray gun - was also used at many firewall pass-throughs, wire and hose grommets, etc. - not the same as body seam sealer, which was thicker and brushable.
