I have a Sateen Silver 62 with the original paint. The hardtop spent virtually its entire life inside the house in the closet and its color is very much a blue-silver. This color can also best be seen on the car inside the boundaries of the ragtop.
Most of the repainted Sateen Silver cars that I have seen dont appear anywhere near what I think the original color looks like. Last week I had the local paint shop mix a sample pint for me and it looks very different. I didnt shoot any on the car but just dabbing some on it just doesnt even seem close.
The paint place says they have a formula for 940-Sateen Silver, not an offset to another color. I know so little about paint...could the formula be off? I have seen reference to a "Satin Silver" in that timeframe. Was there actually a Satin and a Sateen that were different colors and maybe I am getting the formula for Satin?
You could be right about there being two different colors that year.Iwould ask to see solid proof of the "sateen" silver,a color chip or a written or computer formula.I run into this all of the time .For the most part paint stores only keep about the past 15 years worth of formulas and chips on hand because they are dealing mainly with collision shops that are supported by insurance companies and there fore are usually only dealing with newer cars. The best thing to do is to take that top to the store and let him keep it for a few days and match it.Almost every car i do has an "alternate formula" which means our computer says this is the closest thing that matches that color in the last 15 years. :seeya
