Default What is this engine please

This engine is supposedly out of an older vette but I really doubt that. Since it was given to me I took it in hopes I or someone could use it and it wouldn't just go to waste.
The left rear ledge has a 9 3349352 with GM over the 334 area. This is just below the left head on the ledge.

FI229DE is on the front right boss below the head.

3840905 is on the manifold with 61416 above that.

All of these are raised not stamped numbers except the FI # on the boss.

Any of you small block gurus know what this is? Looks like a 283 to me but I don't know much.

Sorry but I don't see well. This is what I got from the MOR TEC site after someone read the number correctly.

3849852....283...57-66...2

Hi

It helps if you read the number correctly. It is actually 3849852 which is on our http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm page. It is a 283.

The motor was assembled at the Flint, MI plant (F) on December 29th (1229). The "DE" suffix code was used on MANY different model years, so we also need the block casting date from the rear ledge of the block. (See our page at http://www.mortec.com/location.htm for information on where to look for it and what it looks like.) Once we have the block casting date we can then look up the use of the "DE" suffix code in that model year.

The intake number you sent is not helpful since they are so easily swapped. However, that two barrel carb intake was used on '64-'65 283/195hp motors in cars and trucks. I can also tell you that this motor was NEVER originally in a Corvette.

Let us know what the block casting date is.

Since it was a 2bl intake I knew it had been either changed or it definitely wasn't a corvette motor. It's hard to imagine why anyone would put a 2bl intake on a hi perf motor. I'm hoping it is the original motor to the 65 El Camino.

Thanks

BTW are the plugs angled on the higher performance 283 that year?

Then I'm beginning to get more hope that this spare engine is the original engine from the car.

I'll get some more numbers and post them with the VIN.

The seller stated it was the original motor and I believed him. Still have to check before I start spending money on it though.

Thanks again.

Neither the block, the intake, or the "DE" suffix code were ever used in any Corvette application; it's a 2-barrel 283 passenger car motor.
