According the Colvin's "Chevrolet By The Numbers", the 961 block was never used in the Corvette, (it was used for 1965-66 passenger car and 1966 Chevelle 396 ci applications only). By the way, it is a 2-bolt main block only, while the 942 came in both 2 and 4-bolt flavors.

A 961 passenger block turned up in Nolans 66 survey data in his C2 resto book. Since his books are considered by many to be the gospel, it gave credence to the myth that a few 961 blocks found their way into very early 1966 Corvettes.

and the possiblity of the 961 block in the 66 was then preserved and mentioned in Antonick's Black Book (he called it uncertain, at least).

And so it goes . . . .

The NCRS Spec Guide says "possible early"; I don't have a '66 JG, but it will say for sure whether it's acceptable.

The third edition 66 JM does not make any reference to a 962 block being installed in early 66 corvettes. The only reference it makes is that early 942 blocks (up to 1700) could contain gussets above the timing cover like the 962 block. Page 58
