Default Question on correct bolts

The bolts that hold the brake & fuel lines to the frame. What is the finish supposed to be? Black phosphate? Cad plated? Mine are in need of a good clean up and I've never seen replacements in any catalogs.

Thanks
Jim

Your '70 TM&JG should indicate the correct finish; those are 5/16"-18 self-tappers, and Paragon has them.

I do and I checked but there is no reference to their finish....you might try posting on the NCRS board....I'm sure you'll get an answer there. :chevy

I can try taking a pic of one of mine if you don't get an answer.

Seems to me I posted this same question on the NCRS board not too long ago and the answer I got back was "black"....

Also, the ones that paragon supplies are bright zink... DR's are black...

After a little research - remembered that I had Paragons bolt identification poster hanging on the wall in the garage :bb it seems Paragon only caries zink plated, while the vendors carry black phosphate. I did finally find them in the Dr's catalog as well as Zip, Corvette America, etc.

After closer inspection of my originals, they were black. So I'll keep it that way.

Thanks again

I spoke to Richard (the original owner of Paragon) about this a few years back. He told me that on many of the original bolt drawings a Zinc plate may be specified but black oxide may also be specified as an alternate coating or vice versa. I've found that items that are in plain view (like under hood) are generally zinc or cad plated while if the bolt is out of sight (like on the chassis well under the car) it could be either. The high strength fasteners were almost always black. He also said that there may have been 3 or more suppliers for a particular bolt at any one time during production and each supplier may have had a preference as to what coating they preferred.

Black oxide is the cheaper coating but tends to rust faster. The factories didn't really care if the bolt rusts after the car leaves the plant and the black oxide was enough to keep the fasteners from flash rusting on the assembly line floor.

Production chassis fasteners weren't black oxide coated - they were black phosphate coated, then oiled; called out on GM prints as "phosphate and oil", and they rusted relatively soon after the car left the dealer's lot. Black oxide is a more expensive coating, and about the only place that coating was ever used was on C2 cluster attaching screws, as they were highly visible and out in the open.

There were always three or four suppliers for each fastener in those days, but fastener finishes weren't left up to the supplier's preference; the finish specs were on the drawing, and the parts had to meet that spec, although in some cases there were optional specs shown on the drawing, and the supplier could use either one.

I bow to you, John. I think my paraphrasing of Richard's comments was by all means not verbatim but honest in it's intent. I still refer to Paragon's bolt guide chart as a handy reference. Thanks for the correction.

Another outstanding source for fasteners I've used for many years is AMK ( http://www.amkproducts.com ); they have a terrific catalog, and are one of the few suppliers that have LOTS of correct phosphate-and-oil coated fasteners, in all sorts of OEM configurations that aren't available anywhere else.

John, I just checked out the AMK website and was wondering if their catalog would be beneficial as far as mid-years since the site did not mention anythihg Corvette specific. Thanks again

You may not be able to match up exact headmarks, but they have just about every head configuration you'll need (plain hex, flanged, integral washer, captured conical washer, etc.), and in the correct finish. I don't worry a lot about headmarks if they're the correct configuration and finish.
