Hey Corey, I installed the same set of carpet in my 69 this winter. If you aren't sure if you have the right sides matched up yet, switch them. There is a way which seems right and the wrong way is obviously the wrong way, it's easy to tell if you switch them around. You will have to do some minor trimming, but not a lot compared to the ACC carpet set I installed a few years ago. Make sure you have the padding in first, as that helps a lot with the fit of the carpet. There may be a minor bulge here or there, but I have found the longer the carpet is in the car, the more these little bulges smooth themselves out. They are probably from the carpet sitting in a certain position in storage or from packing or something.
The only real tip I have is go slow. Trim the carpet on the conservative side. You can always trim more off, but you can't put it back on. I always worked from the molded corner that goes over the wheelwell area. Keep that part in position, and trim the upper and lower (and front and rear) of the carpet to fit. Good luck!
Al Knoch sells a pad set to go with their carpet set. The pad set is really cheap...like 60-something bucks for the whole car set. The pieces for the back are all flat, but you can tell what goes where. It really fills out the carpeted area. I can see what you mean about the carpet not fitting right if you put it right on the floor with no pad.
