I'm correcting some deviations I made when rebuilding my 67 small block. Were lock washers used on the intake manifold bolts on a base engine 300hp? Were lock washers used on the water outlet bolts? Would there be any deduction if the bolts were painted and then installed instead of being painted as part of the assembled engine?

Jim, the NCRS tech manual is not real clear on the lock washer issue for small block '67s. Here is what is says" Base Engine--Known original cars use bolts with M, FP or F inscribed in a circle headmark to attach the intake manifold botls are painted engine color during the enigne painting process."
The thermostat housing just says "The attaching bolts are painted enigine color. Typical headmarks are RSC and TR." Again since there is no mention of lock washers, I'd say there were not any.
As far as painting the bolts before you put them on, I doubt anyone would look that close. I have done some that way. I usually will use a piece of a plastic bag in the wrench or socket to keep from nicking the paint when I put the bolts in place.
