I purchased a 68 corvette "439" motor in November out of Washington State. At the time of purchase I told the freight company the engine weight was 550 to 600lbs. The freight company just sent me an additional freight bill of $213.00. They claim the engine weight was over 800lbs.
To dispute the additional weight charge, the freight company is requireing that I come up with a GM documentation stating the dry weight of a 427 engine.
I need help in providing this info. Where can I go to find this info?
The bare blocks are at least 350lbs I think. The heads are at least 75lbs each. If it still has the valve train and engine internals and flywhell intact it could be approaching 700lbs. They are heavy beasts. Add the crate in as mentioned earlier and you may have to accept the weight charge.
As I am very much a modern C4 etc type person I hesitate to give any information to this historic experts forum but for what it is worth here goes.
GM have quoted the weight of a big block as 690lb. This is I beleive with all iron heads and inlet manifold. If you go to aluminium heads and sump and manifolds you can just about get the weight down to about 600lb.I beleive my 477CI ( 502 block and 427 crank ) weighs 616lb with a 15lb flywheel and a tilton starter. Add 10-15lb for alternator.
I have not weighed my 477 CI big block specifically but I have weighted the rolling chasis and it comes out close to my calculations using 616lb. As the engine is such a large part of total weight I doubt if the 616lb is way out. Therefore I suspect the GM 690lb for the original all iron BB is also about right. BUT you would need to add 20 -30 lb for the starter +alternator to be sure as manufacturers often quote "undressed" weight ( no accessories). If you had it shipped with iron exhaust manifolds in place that is going to add quite a few pounds.
The chevy power book quotes the block as about 240Lb depending on whether it is a bow tie or not.
So 720lb should do it plus of course the actual cradle and crate. I guess the 800lb could either be the shippers generous view of, say, 750lb or if you did have the exhaust manifolds on they could be within 5% which is all many scales are accurate to.
