Not to sound cold but couldn't someone in the BACK seat have a gun aimed at the approaching officer? Not that vettes have back seats, but you know what I mean. I know some officers who drive vettes and they agree it's sort of stupid.

That's exactly why there are laws against having tint so dark that you can't see in.

Maybe the front plate and the tint laws could be rallied and rewritten so that we might display a front plate on the dash (that could be removed for driving in other states, and car shows, etc) and the tint law could be rewritten to allow, only so much tint, like 35% or something?

Front plates are lame.

The tint laws are not about the cops seeing in. I think it's more about being afraid that you can't see out at night. Also lame.

Just another way to make money.

It wasn't me, but I'd love to hear those B&B's at full throttle.

As long as the front plate is the target for laser speed determination, all us 2 plate states are probably SOL

The reason that window tinting makes it hard for an officer to see what's going on in the car is not valid. The back could be tinted, blocking any activity there or there could be an AK47 in the back of a panel van. Just pass a law that if pulled over by a cop and you have tinted windows then you must lower the window(s) before the officer approaches. I could live with that AND its safer for the law.

Yeah, I know, we have fewer rights when in our cars and the authorities want to be able to see what we're doing in there so that they can pull us over.

I take it you've never made a traffic stop on a dark, deserted road at 3 a.m.

Of coarse not, but in that case (total darkness) window tint wouldn't matter that much anyway.

I'm all for officer safety!!!!
I've been stopped 3 times in 25 years, every time the window was down and my hands were on the wheel before the officer approached.
I've never had a tinted window (other than standard factory) on any car I've ever owned.

That's why I'd be in favor of a law requiring that windows be lowered if stopped. Thats 0% window tint when it matters most, but still allows the owner to keep the car cooler in the sunlight and protect the interior from sun damage.

I think that the purpose of no tint laws is not officer safety but rather to see if the occupants are consuming alcohol, smoking crack, not wearing seatbelts etc. In that case lawmakers should just say so.
Like I said, we have much fewer rights when in our cars, that's obvious, else we couldn't have curtains and blinds on the front and side windows of our homes.

The "original" intent was in fact officer safety. Depending upon the degree of tint, it can be very difficult to see inside a vehicle even with a spotlight shining on the passenger area.

Hi Devil,

I have the upmost respect for your occupation and I hope that you don't think that I'm trying to argue.

I was just trying to make the point that if no tint laws are "originally" for safety then thats great. However such a simple compromise of requiring the windows to be lowered benefits everyone by allowing the benefits of tinting with the ultimate visibility that increases officer safety.

I know that compliance would be an issue, (education and the PA system could help)

Take care

No offense taken. After being in the business for over 34 years, I know how people react to certain laws and I don't put a great deal of credence in public education. I think it would be too difficult to get people to lower their windows during a traffic stop. It's still difficult to get people to yield to an emergency vehicle when you're responding with lights and siren, let alone getting them to lower their windows. I do agree with the fact that a front plate isn't necessary. I'm retiring in August, so I'm not going to worry about either issue a whole bunch.

I started in September of 1970 and I'm not sure where the time has gone. I won't miss the knuckleheads we deal with on a daily basis, but I'm really going to miss the people I work with. My last day is August 19th.

Ahhhhhh, the exuberance of youth! I'd been back from Vietnam nearly 2 years in 1970. I think I'm starting to get old.

It's not my fault that they have a very comfortable leather couch that's easy to fall asleep on.
