I'm considering installing muffler eliminators on my '86. However, I live in northern Illinois (Naperville) where cars must pass an emissions test.
Does anyone from the area know if exhaust noise (decibel level) is measured as part of the test? Also, if I leave my catalytic on the car but add muffler eliminators, will the car pass emissions testing? My car is in a good state of tune and has never failed the test with stock mufflers. Thanks for your help.
Yea all mufflers do is muffle exhaust. Nothing to do with emmisions. As far as i know there is no decible test of any kind. Just as long as your exhaust doesnt have any leaks. As long as you dont mess with the catylytic converters you will be ok. Happy modding
My Borla XR1s that look obnoxious passed no problem (I am in the Western Suburbs too)
I'm concerned about meeting/passing noise emissions standards. Are your pipes much louder than stock? Did you get any comments from the emissions testers about noise?
There was a bill that was due to be passed regarding aftermarket exhaust and noise. It was posted here very early this year. I called my State rep to voice against it, don't know what happened to it. If passed the folks at the emissions lanes had all the power to say too loud or ok. To my knowledge it has not passed YET.

yes, very loud and noticeably not factory equipment
emissions tester said nice exhuast - and when i asked him to run it on the dyno thing, so the walls of the building would fall off - he wouldn't do it - passed no problem

the post right above this, the law was not passed... but they'll try again next year
