Can any of you tell me what to do to prevent rust? Where do you store your cars? I am new to the area. I am surprised about how much rust I see in the Chicago area. I am concerned about my car getting rusted?
1. What should I do to the garage to prevent parts from rusting?
2. How often should I run the heater in the garage?
3. My car is now in an enclosed trailer. Should I leave it in the trailer throughout the winter? I was planning on bringing in the chassis into the garage.
4. The basement is dry should any parts go into the basement?
I am trying to figure out what I should do since I do not want any rust.
You should be fine if you park your car during the winter and keeping it away from salty roads. I have zero rust on my '99 car and never drive it during the snowy months. By the way.... if you are looking for a rust preventative.... think, "WD-40"

I agree wd40 is an idea, I like a product amsoil sells it's a metal protector and lube, it sprays on like a penetrating out, and dries to a wax like substance. It helps keep from attracting dust. It works great as an under coating as well. And it can be cleaned off like oil ect. But doesn't just rinse off with water it's neat stuff. I sell it if your interested (I sell it because I like the product). I store my bare engine blocks and other parts this way. I also use it under my truck to help keep body seems ect, from rusting.
Also in the garage I would lay a rubber backed carpet under the car this will help keep moisture from coming up throught the concrete.
Anyway good luck and welcome to the midwest!

I would recommend heating your garage at a constant temperature all the time. This will prevent condensation from occuring on the metal components of your car. 55-60 degrees should do it, idea is to keep the temperature of the metal above dew point at all times. Good idea that Rick had as well, moisture barrier under the car. Other winter layup tips:
1. Fill the fuel tank full, add stabilizer per mfr. instructions.
2. Over inflate the tires by 10 pounds to prevent flat spotting.
3. Change the oil and filter.
4. Disconnect the battery and keep it charged up with a battery tender.
5. Thoroughly clean the inside of the car. Any food scraps invite critters.
6. Don't store dog food, garbage, or bird seed in the garage, invites critters.
7. Cover the car with a breathable car cover to keep it nice and clean.
8. Once the car is laid up don't start it occasionally. This does more harm then good by introducing moisture to the oil and dry starts. Many people will produce arguments regarding this. The engine will be just fine over the course of the winter.
I have one of these and it works really well, though it limits my access to the car as I need to dry out the desiccant each time I open the bag. Still, for the winter, it is nice to have.
