Considering a winter upgrade on my 08Z. Just curious to see what you paid for a cam swap and possible a cam and springs. Price for the labor only.

I'm in a similar boat as you, I'm thinking of tossing a cam in over winter. I went to a local shop and got quoted 3700 dollars for cam/springs/tune if I brought in all parts. . I lold. . I'm pretty sure that was a 'f-off and get lost kid' quote. If I end up pulling the trigger I'll likely just wind up DIYing it at this rate.

I paid around $3,000 when I had a cam installed in my 03Z. That included alot of stuff though (cam, springs, underdrive pulley, thermostat, gaskets, tune etc...) I would think that the labor is around 1000 to $1500 though.

After my cam and header install it was dyno'd at about 415 rwhp.

Turn it up. It sounds great.

It depends on the cam, and what's done to the car already. I have a few profiles I've been using for years that have been proven to make significant and consistent horsepower gains. I'd rather talk to a perspective customer and find out what they're looking for, and try to select a cam that best suits them than to just sell everybody the same off the self cam. Or if they have cam spec's they'd like to use, I can get those as well. Our cams can pick up anywhere from 45-65 rwhp depending on the size in most applications. Our LS7 cams can do even more.

I did it myself with a minimum of tools over a weekend. The labor is the biggest cost of the project. I seen all kinds of step by step instructions online with pics.

If you have some mechanical aptitude and are comfortable wrenching, you can do the cam yourself.
It is a pretty involved job. You do not have to remove the motor, however there is alot of crap that does need to be removed or push aside to get to the cam... power steering rack, radiator, Ac condensor, powersteering lines, air intake, alternator, timing cover etc. etc..
Technically not complicated just lots of crap in the way. Labor is the largest cost as the rest have said.
Good luck

Once you do it look out. Speed did mine and it is a smaller cam, but it kicks ***. Only 520 to the wheels, but it is like stock when you close the baffles, which i only do on the highway.
I did the muffler mod also which really makes a difference. If i knew how to load a video i would let you hear it. It gets a lot of compliments, thats for sure.

Our larger LS7 cams are now getting over 550rwhp on our Mustang MD-1100SE dyno. Here's a link to a post I made with the dyno sheets from earlier in the year.

Here's a video of the cam at idle and on the dyno in a different Z06 as well.

What does something like that cost? I think I would rather have a nice lopey sounding cam, if that makes sense. As long is it drove ok and the stock clutch could handle the power, I think I would lean towards a little more aggressive street set up.
