He CAN be entered into the system as a missing person/adult. Once that's done, if any LEO in the country runs him, he will come back as missing. The officer will check on his welfare and inform him he's listed as missing. He can tell your son he should contact you, but since he's an adult (and assuming he poses no danger to himself or others and hasn't committed a crime) the officer cannot take him into custody or detain him so you can pick him up.
It could also be that he left the Chicago area in pursuit of another job, another woman, or to stay with friends in another city or state. That's why it's important to get him registered in the nationwide system for missing persons.
