I used Irfanview to resize my photos. It's a free download and simple to use.

Most basic photo editing software packages have a resize function. Look under 'tools' or some such thing.

If you are using Photobucket as your host. If you click on Edit above the photo you will have the option in the middle of the page of reducing to 75%, 50%, or 25% with one button click. Otherwise Irfanview is about as good as it gets for freeware.

Something around 600-700 pixels at 72 DPI or PPI would be good. Batch resizeing in Irfanview is really nice

You have a couple of options, as you've seen. Here's a few more.
Did you get a photo editor with your camera? If so you might want to search around in it's help file for resize.
Are you running Windows XP? You might try the image resizer you'll find on this page.

Or Microsoft Photo Editor, or Microsoft Picture Manager.
Good luck.

When you open the pic in MS Office Picture Manager (it comes with later-edition Windows so look for it in your Microsoft Office folder in My Programs), click on top where it says "Edit Picture", then on the right choose "Rezise" then choose "Predefined Width X Height" then choose "Web Large" then "OK". Then "Save".
Then you can upload pictures of this size to Photobucket much faster since they aren't such large files.
