OK, maybe not exactly like that because after I replied to this one, the envelope was closed and it wasn't bold anymore, but the ones I haven't read are bold with an open envelope.

It's some combination of that. Those you have been in, those you haven't. Those you have posted in, those you haven't. Some even become "unbolded" automatically after a certain period of time.
