Would really appreciate any advice anybody can offer, since I\'m getting bored of using a proxy.

It turned out that I had to upgrade the firmware in my (brand new) Linksys WAG200G broadband modem/router. Thank you to my ISP, Zen Internet here in the UK, for their excellent technical support in diagnosing this.
The overall problem may have been caused by the MTU setting in the modem's configuration, so if someone else has similar problems accessing this site, or microsoft.com or aol.com then try changing the MTU from the default 1500 to 1492 or 1458. Apparently microsoft.com and aol.com are sensitive to this obscure network performance setting.

Glad you got it figured out
