Search function timing out

Search function timing out
Why does the search function have a timer on it? It is a pain when the search times out, and I have to start all over.
Sometimes, I may be in the middle of a search and leave for a while and come back, click on a link and get an error message. Something about timing out or something.
Or I may be doing a long search, and after a while. When I hit the back button to go back to my search results, I'll get this message:
"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."
So, then I have to start my search all over again forgetting where I was at or the specific words I searched for.

I've also noticed I can't get into the tech files. It requests a username and password. I enter it in, and I get an error message. So, I can't look up any tech pages.
