What is the purpose of the teeny tiny messaging folders? Seriously, it feels like an e-mail or messaging platform from the mid 1990's. The messages I send are text-only, which takes up almost no space, and the messaging folders are limited to only a handful of those tiny messages before the space is used up. I think you could increase the limit 20-40 times the current limit and still take up less space than a 1990's floppy disk.
2TB drives are less than $100 and would hold many millions of these text-only messages. And if you used simple compression on these text messages (my heart be still), you could probably store 4x more.
Any chance of moving the technology forward a little bit?
Probably debatable as to what is considered a "member". The memberlist only includes those accounts that have posted. There are plenty (literally hundreds) of members that have browsed well after registration date but have not posted. And that's just looking at a small period.

I offer the following hypothethical numbers for consideration (if not just an LOL of amusement) ......
100,000,000 100 million messages
multiplied by 3,000 bytes (characters) per message
-------------------
300,000,000,000 total bytes (characters)
divided by 1,000,000,000 1 billion bytes = 1GB
-------------------
300 GB's
(my apologies in advance if I messed up the math -- if so, please ignor the rest of the message)
Text messages will compress AT LEAST 3x, so 300GB becomes 100GB with simple compression.
Remember, a 2,000 GB (2TB) drive currently lists for less than $100.
I know the numbers above aren't actual, but if they were, I'd advocate getting 100 people to contribute $1 to fund an increase in messaging limits.
If so, you could absolutely count on me to contribute the first $1 !
And, if you feel like you need a second redundant backup drive, I'll even go $2.
Just one little thing you're overlooking: The forum gives more message space to the paying supporting members. It's part of the reward for paying to support the forum.
As Jim pointed out above, the ability to receive more PM space is given to Supporting Members. This site does rely on Supporting Members and Sponsors. The less difference between a free account and Supporting Member can have an adverse impact on the site's ability to pay the big bills a site like this incurs.
In addition, there's more to factor than disk space. There's also MySQL database overhead and other factors to consider. The more data you have stored in a database, the more resources (beyond disk space) that's needed to work with that data. And then there's the need for redundancy. CF works on a cluster of equipment.
