Other forums place a black dot on the open envelope to the left to indicate that you've posted in a thread. Is there any way to turn that feature on with this forum, or am I missing something?
It's a good way to quickly see which threads I've posted in and want to return to.

Unfortunately that feature is disabled as it, and a few others, can cause resource issues on large and active forums.
You can keep track of activity in threads you participated in by visiting the My Recent Topics section. You could also use the Subscription feature, which you don't have to use email notification part. Using the Subscription feature, all threads you participated in, or you subscribed to without posting in, will always appear in your UserCP whenever there's been updates since your last visit.
