Roughly one third of my clicks on various navigation links on this site are downloading the pages instead of displaying them in my browser. It's ONLY on this site.
I'm a senior software engineer by trade, and I've warned you about a "double-click" issue sounding like a screwed up server in the load balancer rotation. I've also been the lucky receiver of some nasty spyware that took me several hours to remove around that time. This feels like the same sort of thing. I believe one or more of your web servers is serving out the response MIME-types as some other file-type rather than html so browsers want to download it rather than render it. You end up with a bunch of file downloads at the bottom of the screen. It's really, REALLY annoying.
As before, I'm willing to work with you to debug/troubleshoot the issue, but please don't ignore it.
yup.
something is a miss.
I normally use firefox but can't now.
if I don't get a download request I get a page of code symbols.
I have to use Internet explorer now. yuck.

As with the double click issue, it is intermittent. I think that's an important point. Servers don't just randomly decide to behave differently on different http requests. There's one or more servers in a rotation that aren't right.
Is the picture shown by member calwldlife what you're also seeing, or are you only getting a download/save prompt?
Also, has this occurred outside of the offtopic section?
I have only ever seen Chrome try to render the response once, and it looked very similar to what calwldlife posted (ie. HTTP response headers first, then a bunch of garbage/symbols). Every other time it has been a download. It happens with both GETs and POSTs. When it happens with POSTs, my forum post (yes, I know that's a different kind of post ) usually does get through, then I get the download at the bottom, and if I click submit post again, it tell me it's a dupe.
I only typically post in PR&C. It's been a while since I've posted anywhere else.
If this helps, it usually happens in batches. I'll click 20 links and get the proper behavior, then i'll get like 5 or 6 bad responses in a row. Waiting for a short time in between seems to help sometimes.
I stopped using FF because I got infected by spyware on this very site while using it. It was the nasty kind too that required hours of work to remove it. Now I don't know what to do. The problem continues...
