Default threads showing as already read

I am using Chrome browser.

pretty much at least once a day all threads are showing as already having been read by me. I thought it might have something to do with switching from my laptop to my phone. But tonight I opened the forums with lots of threads showing new posts. Every one that I opened went to the latest post (the post made after the last post i had read in that thread.) But I have had the forums open on my laptop for about 3 hours or so now. I went to different tabs for a while and to other programs and now when I come back and refresh the forums all threads are showing as read already.
any ideas why this happens and how to stop it?

The forums are setup so that after 30 minutes of inactivity the account is determined to be inactive and all posts made prior will automatically be marked as read - even if you didn't actually read them. This behavior is default for the software and widely used on other websites. CorvetteForum has been this way for the past several years.

There is no way to stop this beyond being active every 29 minutes and 59 seconds to prevent the 30 minute timer from expiring and setting all prior posts as read.

ok. thanks. i'll try to remember to exit each time. i don't have to log off do i?

What is the reason for having the software do this? Seems pretty lame to me. I read a different vB forum that i'm pretty sure is much larger than this one and they don't do this.

thanks.

This specific behavior is similar to how vBulletin is setup by default. Meaning, after X amount of inactivity by the account, the account is determined to be inactive and all posts prior to that point are automatically marked as read. CorvetteForum is setup for 30 minutes. That figure can be changed by the website. Some times use 20 minutes. Some sites actually use an hour or more. This is also tied in with the Whose Online - which shows the members "online". Some sites inflate the figure so that their site looks bigger than normal by showing members that are online when they may actually not be online.

vBulletin is very customizable. There are most certainly sites that use different configurations. Some sites likely use the database tracking to track what a member has actually read or not. The issue is there is significant enough overhead with those settings that it's outlined in the manual with a caution about resource usage.
