is it possible to post video direct to the forum or does it need to be hosted somewhere like YouTube, then the link added to the post?

If it's over 5MB, which is most likely, it's not going to work. CorvetteForum has generally not accepted direct video uploads. That's pretty much normal for sites like CorvetteForum. Videos take up a lot of disk space and (especially in the past) long upload times.
By large, videos are posted to YouTube and simply hot-linked.
