Default starter/flywheel problem

I have a 1964 Corvette with an original 327 365hp motor/ trans. I had the motor rebuilt about 4 years ago. Everything has been working well until this summer.
When starting, the starter was turning but not engaging with the flywheel. After a couple more tries, it will and the motor will start. I thought it was the solenoid and replaced it. The problem persisted. I had the whole starter rebuilt and the problem continued. I pulled off the inspection cover and removed the starter to look at the ring gear. It looked like the front of some teeth are worn in spots. Not chipped, just beveled back a little bit. I thought the starter was too close to the flywheel. I tried shimming the starter 1/8 inch. That did not fix the problem.
I don't know of a way to move the starter back, only up and down. Move flywheel or ring gear forward? Try shimming the starter a bit more than 1/8 inch? I'm thinking that the starter gear is not going back far enough

Hello, this Help section is for Help with the CorvetteForum website (account issues, etc.,) and is not the place to post technical questions about Corvettes, or other questions not related to the website, as they will not be seen by other Corvette owners.

Instead, please find the correct section, based on the generation of the Corvette.

Go back to the main forum page:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/

Now start to slowly scroll down until you see your generation of Corvette listed.

C1 or C2 (1953 - 1967)?:

We encourage new members to take some time to browse around the site and read the Announcements and Stickies as they contain important and frequently asked information.

Thank-you
