When I click the button on someone's post the button disappears but doesn't show below the post that I like it...is this how it is supposed to be now? Will others see I liked it?

Yep others and the original poster should see that you liked the post and it should add to your likes count on the left side of your screen

the likes counter on the left only counts likes that you have received and not given
