You bring up an interesting point, one that bugs the living crap out of we "really old timers", and that is when changes just happen, without explanation, or instructions, and we're expected to figure it out, all by ourselves.....

This comment reminded me of a book that came out back in the 1990s...Who Moved my Cheese By Ken Blanchard...wrote a series of One Minute Manager books and speaks to those with responsibility for decision-making and making changes without informing, those who it affects.
Lots of changes recently on the forum (past year) but members are smart and figure it out...eventually!

I like to compare the people working in the computer, cell phone and internet tech world, to those working at government regulatory agencies. While those at government agencies need to continually come up with new regulations to justify their existence, the people in the tech world seem to have to continuously update and change operating systems and programs to justify their existence. And just like how new government rules and regulations rarely make life better or cheaper for the public, changes to tech rarely make the systems operate better or easier to operate for the end user.

My son's the head of IT for one of the national rail freight lines. Luckily I think he understands that change for change sake, isn't always the best idea.

Sorry to be a contrarian on this beautiful Christmas morning, but I am waiting on these lazy kids to get out of bed and couldn't help but to respond. Most of us techies are not like government regulatory guys. The updates are usually driven by parts obsolescence. They simply don't make the old chips. New chips require new firmware which drives new software which rolls in a few customer requests, but nobody is happy with all this gyration. Except for the chip manufacturers. But everyone wants faster better stuff so there you go.
