Default First Vette

Hey all from SW Washington, just got my first Corvette.
I've been a Chevy guy all my life with the fastest car I ever owned being a '69 Camaro,4 speed car with a 427 Vette engine sporting quite a few mods to it.
I just aquired an '84 C4 project car in a trade deal so I'll have lots of questions for all you Vettesperts
This car had been sitting quite a while and the guy I traded out of it was full of **** as a Christmas goose so I got no help from him on what it really needs.
I have a feeling he thought the motor was frozen up even though he claimed to have had it started recently.
He said it needed a battery and that it took a charger on overnight and a jumper to start it but I know he was full of it.
When I first tried to start it all I got was some hideous groaning and grinding noises and it did kind of sound like a bad engine.
I pulled out the battery and put it on a charger, then cleaned up the cable ends and put the brand new 75 month heavy duty battery out of my truck in it and tried again.
Again it made some pretty nasty sounds but then it started to crank over slowly and tried to fire.
At that point I got a bit excited because I fully though this car most likely had a bad engine,I'm only in it about $1000.
One more try and it groaned again at first then suddenly started up.
I knew right then that the joker I got it from hadn't started it.
It was typical of a motor that had not fired in a long time, lifters were noisy for a minute till oil got up to the top end, white smoke or I guess I should say steam made a huge cloud behind the car as all the condensation came out of the engine and exhaust system.
I didn't run it very long but as the smoke cleared up I thought before I shut it down I'll see if it goes into gear.
I pulled it into reverse and it went right in,moved it to drive and again it went right in so I pulled out of the driveway and went down the street to try the other gears and all worked.
It was pinging under load but I figure the gas in it is old and bad.
This weekend I bought a starter/solenoid, 5 quarts of oil & filter and a bottle of heet gas dryer and went to work on it.
I put the battery that came with it back in fully charged and stuck in a new starter and did the oil change.
Today it started right up and drove pretty good, next is a tank of fresh gas and some new spark plugs but I'm already stoked to have a running Vette for $1000.
It needs a lot of other TLC so I'll head off to the appropriate areas here at the forums and start with my newbie questions.
Thanks all..........Dean

Welcome!!! Same generation that I started with I like the fact you can actually work on the engine pretty well with the hood that lifts the front off the car for more room.
