the story of a 62 vette
hello everyone,
i want to introduce myself and my dad's 62 vette. i found this corvette forum and love it. here's the story.. i hope you all enjoy. my stepdad (this will be the last i mention the step part because he was more of a dad to me then anyone, if you catch my drift.) anyway, my dad bought a 62 vette in 82. he bought it from a friend while at an auction. this isn't the story of the first fuelie produced, but a car that has more sentimental value to me than a price tag could be put on. he drove the car through the grand canyon, to florida and all over the country. ( we are from PA, i am in the air force and currently in florida) In 1988 i met my dad and he introduced me to his 62 vette. Through my youth my dad, mom, little sister and i would take rides in the beautiful honduras maroon vette. that's right my dad in the driver's seat, mom in the passenger seat, my sister between my moms legs and me behind the 4speed that he occasionally let me go from second to third in. Memories, memories.....then one day my dad develops a back injury on the job. a disc ruptures in his spine he can barely walk and obeys all the doctor's orders. it turns out that this makes it worse. and in the winter, from the weather there would be times where he would go paralyzed. This continued for years over a decade. the vette sits all this time 15 years almost. My dad's health worsens. From being bed ridden at times and a victim of phillip-morris he develops esophogyial cancer. through numerous radiation and chemo treatments he survives but his body is very tired. he goes on for 5 more years until his organs just can't take it. he entered eternal peace in Oct of 2005. a year prior to his death his best friend who he bought the car from in 82 and i got the car running for him to enjoy the remaining year of his life. My dad loved that car. He had two rottweilers, "corvette and fuelie" and on his grave a 62 vette etched on it. My memories of my dad are so vivid when i look at the covette. my mom said the day before he passed he was working on the vette. At the funeral processsion his 62 vette lead the way to his place of eternal rest. I am so proud to take care of his car. To some it is a 62 vette, but to me, it is my dad. The car is not a #'s matching as it was a theft recovery, but i am in the process of putting in a 67 327. he has a fuelie unit for a 62 but he never intended on putting it on, so i will end up selling it so i can afford to restore the paint and any other odds and ends. i look forward to speaking with you guys as to keep this car living.
thanks for reading about my dad and his love for his corvette.

Welcome to the fourm!
What a great post --- Thank you for sharing!
All the best to you and the '62 Vette! Check out the Section for C1 & C2 Corvettes (1953 - 1967) for lots of information on your vintage Vette. I am sure the members there will also be glad to help with any questions you may have.

Welcome..great story.
I refer to my vette’s as rolling inheritance and hope my son will appreciate them as much as I have over the years.
