Back in the game
Well, I just purchased a 1991 Corvette, red with tan leather interior, six speed, all performance options including ... yes, the rare Z07 option. For being a 18 year old car, it had only 49k miles on it, two previous owners (both adult) and for the princely sum of $8100 on Ebay. I couldn't believe my luck (especially since Z07s are comparatively rare and finding one that is low miles and low price is even harder).
The interior is near mint (near meaning it needs a good cleaning, the factory stereo is MIA with an Alpine imposter in its place) and the rear cargo shade hooks are missing (the little tabs that the shade locks into when you extend it to hide your goodies). Both sides ... missing. The seats are not torn, the center console is not warped and the dash isn't worn. All gages and instruments work correctly.
Paint wise, the car looks good from 5 feet away but up close there is some sun bleaching on the front nose and rear cap. There is a mysterious white circle on the hood where it looks like the clear coat frosted. There is a two inch area of paint missing from the front nose. Someone keyed the driver's side door from a foot in front of the handle past the handle for a foot after the door meets the body. Someone did this with some amount of angst because the scratch is deep, down into the fiberglass itself. Someone was either jealous or angry. Either way the end result was the same.
The wheels are in really good shape and she has brand new rubber all around.
The power antenna doesn't work. The AC doesn't blow cold. The heater isn't hooked up (it was a Miami car and the owner said it doesn't ever get cold in Miami). The heater looks to be a simple fix, no idea on the AC yet. Everything inside the car works, all lights, cruise, seats, windows, wipers.
The car's first owner, a BMW tech in the Miami area, turbocharged the car. He installed a boost gage and a AFR gage (digital) in a two pod mount on the driver's left side of the front window. Both gages work (the AFR strangely kept time to the trance music that seemed to be playing a lot down there). The heater was disconnected due to something about the design of the turbocharger system ... go figure. When he went through a divorce, he sold the car (minus the turbo system ... why!?!?) to the second owner. Maybe you all know this guy and can give me some background on the Vette.
Perhaps not.
The second owner was about the size of Shaq and on the test ride he sat in the passenger seat with his knees almost to his chest. He liked the car but he wanted a C5 with the bigger interior. I could understand why.
So, I have a 1991 red with tan leather interior Z07 optioned coupe. One roof car (RPO says this) and it is the body colored roof (with a drooping headliner that flaps in the wind but strangely feels good on your scalp). I flew 1000 miles to Miami, Fl to pick up the car and drove it 1000 miles back. It had 49k miles on it when I picked it up, now it has a little over 50k miles on it.
I ran the car on premium gas, both tanks that I used. Yes, I went nearly 1000 miles on two tanks of gas. Here's the Twilight Zone part: I ran the car at speeds of 75mph to 95mph on the second day of the return trip (this was simply keeping up with traffic). One spurt was done to 120mph and that was to catch back up with the pack that I had been following when they left me behind negotiating a tangle of slower moving traffic. It did nothing but rain the first day. The second day of the trip there wasn't a cloud in the sky. I took the roof off and stowed it first thing that morning. I got sunburned on half of my face. I'm an adult and I should have known better but it was a small price to pay for the fun I had. In a few days, I may not think so...
I averaged 25.3 mpg.
I have the picture of the dash to prove it. I didn't think you could get 25.3mpg running a C4 Corvette consistantly at those speeds. The pic actually shows 25.2mpg since I took it after I got home and had driven the car some in town thus knocking my mileage down by a tenth.
Overall, I'm pleased. The car needs some little TLC but the wife loves it and like they say ... if momma is happy then EVERYONE is happy.
