New Vette Owner!
Just picked up a brand new 2010 Grand Sport Coupe 6 speed... I am pretty excited, but have some (perhaps stupid) questions! I want to break this thing in as best as possible.
I am a little rusty on my manual driving skills, but I guess I am doubting myself right now! Here is why...
1) I take it out for a spin and I start to smell some burning (almost equivelant to burning rubber) the only thing I can think of is I'm burning my clutch a bit- is that normal on new cars or do I need to do something different? (I never owned a new manual before).
2) The Vette tells me sometimes to shift from 1---> 4 I read through the manual and it states it's because a certain speed or rpm's reached a certain limit- If that is the case it will always tell me to go into 4th gear if I'm racing wouldn't it?
3) Any help in breaking the new vette in would be awesome!
I'm pumped to be a new vette owner and plan on doing a lot of research to come!
Thanks guys-
Congratulations on your new GS!! Hope you enjoy the car and the Forums. From now on, any questions you have should be asked in the C6 General Forum.

But I'll get you started with your current questions.
1. The odor of anything burning is not normal. If you think it's the clutch then you need to change what you're doing. The C6 clutch is one of the more difficult to master only because it tends to engage so near the top of the pedal stroke. I suggest you find a large, flat, empty parking lot to practice in. With the car in 1st, engine idling, keep your right foot away from the gas, practice letting the clutch out without stalling the engine. You'll eventually learn how easy it is and that you don't need to race the engine to get going.
2. No. The CAGS (Computer Aided Gear Selection) is designed for low speed, low throttle situations. It is there to allow the Vette to escape the Government's gas guzzler tax. Here's a description of how it works:

There are CAGS eliminator products available it you want to disable it. Many just learn to drive the car above the trip points.
3. The proper break-in procedure is outlined in the owner's manual. Just follow it.
There is A LOT to learn about these cars. Just one example is there is a clutch fluid maintenance/replacement procedure you should learn and follow religiously. This isn't a Honda Civic that you can drive, put gas in and not think about. Read the owner's manual, several times. Spend time in C6 General and ask any questions you have.
Good luck, have fun, see you in C6 General.
The CAGS- is a bit scary because I typically don't look down @ the dash I shift according to the engine sound- So I have to keep an eye on that.
I will take your advice on the empty parking lot. You think the problem is first gear? I can't believe I am having a bit of trouble driving stick!
Thanks again!

I have smelled stuff to from the car too. I think, however, mine maybe new engine break in? I mean my other cars had the same smell during the early stages. I checked all the gauges and they all seem to be normal. I notice the clutch pops a bit early and it's a definite indent where it engages. Seems to be loosening up though. Mine is 4 weeks old with 140 some odd miles. Bought with 8 miles. I'll probably get an oil change and have them check over the tranny fluid. It sat on the lot for 8 months before I got it.
I am doing the same though ...asking alot of questions as I come from the Ford Cobra...98, 04 and 09...so, this is a bit different car.
