Default Second C5 Corvette, new to forum

Hey y'all,

Assuming all goes well today, should be picking up my second C5 Corvette today! It's a nice deep blue (I forget the name of the color) 2000 with the glass roof (exact same as I had before!).

A couple questions real quick. Pardon if they sound funny, I'm about to run out the door right now, but I wanted to get this down before I forget.

1. What would be a nice set of exhaust tips to freshen up the back? I will of course eventually putting something on it, but for the time being I don't have the time, but I still want the back to look nice

2. Is there any radio (aftermarket of course) that can be put in that has an auxiliary jack, but that does not require any modification to the dash and doesn't look like garbage? I'm just looking at options here, this isn't a high priority

3. Where would be a good place to find parts? I haven't seen the headlights just yet, but I might want a new set at some point (I don't do a lot of night driving through), same for the brake lights, also same for the lights down near the license plate

I think that's about all the questions I have for now. I'm new to the forum, but not Corvettes. This will be my second. My first was a while ago, a 2000 with the glass top, but I had only had it for about a year and a half before someone decided to ignore a stop sign and t-boned me. Needless to say, the Corvette went away after that.

Anyways, I'll put this down here just because I don't want it being a big deal, but I figured I'd introduce myself.

My name's Kevin, I live on the very very east coast of VA (Hampton Roads, specifically Hampton, if you're familiar with the area), I'm 22 and working on my last year of my Bachelors and getting ready to head into a Masters program for human genetics. I work for Apple right now as a representative on some of the local naval bases (I'm not military though), but that will change this fall when I start finishing up everything and preparing for the Masters.

Anyways, I put this bit at the bottom because I can be a little long winded sometimes, but also because I didn't want it to really be a big deal or the point of the topic, so I figured down here it would be easy for people to just skip over if they wish.

Alrighty, I'll get up some pictures later this evening if all goes well!

See y'all

Thanks y'all

Well, the trip yesterday didn't turn out as well as I'd planned. The guy couldn't even get the car to start and the pictures were a complete lie.

But! I'm still at the drawing board. What I think I'm going to do is sell my current car outright, use my Dad and my toy car to drive for the time, then when I find one sell the toy car since the Vette will take its place of course!

I've got a 2010 Malibu LT that I've done up a little (not performance wise, just making it look nice), but I used it because I drive a lot and a while ago money used to be a much bigger factor than it is now, so the fuel sipping was necessary.

Ya never get rid of that American V8 itch though! Once you've had one Vette, there's just no real true going back to anything else!

So, I'mma take my time and find a nice one, looking for a Blue, White, or Silver C5, but I need to make sure I keep it at ~$24k or below. It might take a month or two, maybe even more (although hopefully not), just depends on how long it takes to sell my car or if I can find one sooner at a place that takes trade-ins and would give a good price for mine.

Thanks again for the welcomes y'all!

Out of curiosity, I when I sell my Malibu, I'll have somewhere between $4000-$6000 in cash and I will then get ~$17000-$18000 for a loan, which means I'll have somewhere between $21000-$24000 to pay for my Vette.

What are the chances I could get a 2005 C6 Corvette in the low $20k's? I am looking at '05 because I figured they would be a little cheaper, I didn't figure I could get an '06 although if I could find one that would be amazing.

I figured I would ask because I know I love C5s, but the C6s are awesome as well and are a little newer, so I figured I'd ask y'all what y'all think? I'm not looking for a modded Vette (or if it is, not a turbo charged or cammed or one that is track oriented), but I'm not ruling out -anything- when I look (other than I am only looking at targa top ones), so any suggestions y'all might have and I'd be very open to opinions!

It is possible, '05's "are getting to the low 20's" but you would need to be careful, exercise good judgement and do your due diligence in checking it out. IMO, "most" '05's in that range would likely not be what you would want, but there certainly are good ones out there, just gotta find them. Keep an eye on the C6 For Sale section to get an idea what there is, what to look for and general price ranges. There are idiosyncrasies with the '05's you should educate yourself about too. SO, if you do find one you're interested in be sure to ask for an education in C6 General.

More than likely you could find a cream puff '03-'04 C5 for that money, '05 C6 not so likely. Best of luck.

What is it about the '05s that make them like that?

I would much rather have a really nice C5 than a not-so-nice C6, but I'm wondering why?

Thanks for the response by the way!

Okay! I did some research and found a recall on steering. Not sure if that's the thing or the only thing, but that made me a bit weary.

So, I think I'll go back to the original plan of finding a nice "cream puff" C5

I've found a few in the area, of course have to sell the Malibu first.

I'm trying to figure out if the active keyless entry in 2000 is worth disregarding '97-'99. From what I've read I don't think so and I think I have found a very beautiful '99 Dark Blue (glass targa, head-up display, multi-cd).

I'm talking to my bank today again to talk about financing or getting a loan for something from a private seller.

Keep in mind that most banks won't finance a C5 since the newest ones are almost 8 years old and most are going to be 10-14 years old. Some might, but the rates will be much higher than you are paying on your Malibu. Getting a $17K note on a 10 year old car will be a challenge. You will probably have to go to a credit union to get one finanaced at a rate much higher than what you will have on a newer model year car.

You may be able to buy a more expensive C6 for the same payment when the lower interest rate is considered. Good luck in your search.

I'm actually already approved for $17,000 at 4.5% at 60 months for a 2000 car and rates only improve from there. It is from a credit union.

In regards to the 2005 Corvette thing. I'm assuming it is in reference to the steering recall? If the Corvette goes in to have it serviced, it gets warrantied of course and if it is serviced that shouldn't be an issue correct? If so, I can just check the VIN against the recall list and also check to see if that specific Corvette was serviced under that recall and that should solve that problem!
