Like I need another hobby!
Who I am - Hoosier, Marine veteran, single dad, Information Technology Director
Historically, I have been a Pontiac fan. Have owned several A bodies (LeMans, Grand Am, Can Am), a 66 GTO, 69 Firebird, and others. But I've been out of that business since about 2002 when I moved back to Indiana.
A few years ago, my dad showed up after visiting with a friend of his that lived just down the street from me. He informed me that this friend had a Trans Am for sale, so off we went to look at it. It was an 85 if I remember correctly, and not too bad. But as I was looking at it, the guy says he has a Corvette he would sell. So, back into the corner of the garage we go and pull the cover off a 1974 coupe.
The car was green, and not original (have come to learn it was originally white). The paint was pretty humble, but no damage. He had bought it used about 1976 (already green....why would someone do that to such a new car?) and had it since. Mileage is just a little over 60K, and it runs smoother than a new car. Interior shows wear, under the hood shows its age. But I whimsically bought it, not really knowing a thing about Corvettes.
Put plates on the car, and proceeded to take it for a drive through the country. Got home about dark, and decided to check all the lights. Left the car run, and got out, and as I came around back, I was a little horrified to find the bottom half of the rear bumper cover gone!
I retraced my drive, and found the pieces (and license plate) mangled on the road. And have since removed the rest of the rear and part of the deteriorating front bumper covers. And am now debating the worthiness of this project, and direction I want to go with it.
Which is what brought me to this forum, reading what everyone has to say. I figured I should sign up, in case I decide to start working on this car at some point.
I want to drive the car, and am not bent on it being an original show car, so my thoughts at the moment are to do some work (brakes right off, have discovered a leak at one caliper) on my own, and then have the body/paint and interior professionally done. Then drive the car, and decide what else to do as time passes. Or, bail before I start and avoid the $ and headaches. We'll see.
At any rate, thanks for reading if you've stuck around thus far. And for the information I've already found while reading on the forum.
