Howdy
2000 was a bad year to be shopping in the $50k range. The japanese companies had pulled their entries (RX7/Supra). I was not wild about the C5 interior or the C5 manual feel so I ended up buying a 2000 BMW M Coupe .... a car I still own and that has been incredibly reliable and fun.
I'm not a brand loyalty guy, in fact I have never purchased the same brand twice. I also enjoy the shopping process. If I'm going to spend $X on a car then I'm going to have a good time driving everything in my price range before I make a decision.
I'm not a track guy. I tend to take every sports car I've owned out on the track in a driver's school a few times to find the limits but, for example, $50k was a good bit of money for me in 2000 and the specter of crashing kept tracking the M Coupe from being 100% fun on the track. I think if I wanted to be a track guy then I'd get a trailer and get involved in something where the cars were cheap enough that I could total one and walk away thinking "wow, what a fun weekend." Not true, for example, if I totaled a 2015 Z06.
This seems like a good community and has certainly proven informative as I've been monitoring what's happening with the new C7. Who knows, perhaps I will purchase my first chevrolet next year.
