I had the VATS issue on mine. It was the ignition cylinder not properly contacting the pellet on the key. I just bypassed it since I put a custom alarm system on the car.
Engine bay looks a bit dusty, but the super-ram looks good! Don't stick your hands near that ignition coil when it's running though, might get a good zap without the cover on it!

Do you already have plans for the project?
thanks! When you had the pellet issue would your car crank? Mine cranks but does not fire.
basically get it running to figure out what I have then prioritize suspension and exhaust if runs ok.
Not new to cars but new to C4s and 80-90s GM products

Mine didn't crank at all. Did the previous owner mention the VATS or anything they tried to get it to start? The VATS will disable the starter through a relay and also prevent the injectors from supplying fuel. So if it's cranking then it's likely not a VATS problem.
However - it's possible, though not likely, that the previous owner bypassed the starter relay if they thought is was the VATS and were trying to fix it. If they did that without doing anything else, then it would crank but the ECM wouldn't command the fuel injectors to supply fuel (creating a crank but no firing problem). I only mention this because I've seen it come up in the forums while I was researching my VATS problem. I really doubt it to be the case though.
I've only had my 87 for a year, but I've had it apart more than I would admit to (and more than the wife likes). One thing I would suggest over anything else - get an FSM for your year. Since it sounds like you're going to work on it quite a bit, it'll be well worth the cost (or better if found free). I only use my Haynes manual because it's a quick reference for torque specs, and even then I sometimes double check the FSM.
