Been thinking of getting a C3 or C5/C6 corvette. I was a member of a buick forum and learned a ton as I restored by skylark convertible. The skylark was not the car I wanted but the car I could afford. paid $8K and sold it for $22.5k. It was a three year effort. I just didn't care about the car tho. So I am not going to make that mistake again. I will be asking questions about your experiences with C3s and the newer C5/6s. As a child of the 60s the chrome bumper C3s make my blood boil just looking at them, but the C5/6s are cheep and the preformance is unbelievable for the price. So I will spend some time getting to know the cars and issues you are all having and when the time is right I WILL get the Vette I think will best suit my needs.
Welcome to the Forum!
I think you're taking a great approach in learning all you can about the different generations of Corvettes in which you are interested and making your decision from that.
Best wishes on your search.
Jeff I was out test driving Civics SIs because I wanted something fun to drive with a manual tranny. The more I looked the more disappointed I got with prices and performance. I have always love Corvettes so I did a bit of looking and am very supersized to find I can afford one.
Now its going to come down to old vs newer.

The biggest tip I was given, buy as new as you can afford...

Good Luck and enjoy the hunt!
I test drove a 68 this weekend and your advice of buy "as new as you can afford" is making a lot more sense. The 68 did not have power steering that is something I have never had the privilege of experiencing C5/C6 looks like the way to go for me.
Welcome Chucker,
I too always wanted "That Corvette" I joined the Forum and read so much my eyes were bloodshot.
From everyone that owns one, the consensus is that the C5 was the best platform, the best performance and all for a great price. So I purchased a 2004 Base coup for 17k with 41k miles. It looks brand new and when I took it to a Corvette dealer, they stated that they were impressed with the car.
So, go with your heart, get the C5 or C6 and get similes for miles.
