Default Hello from a (sort of) C5 owner in N.C.!

Hi all,

I'm a member and lurker of many car sites. I've found it just depends on what you're trying to do. I've read many articles here over the past few years, and now that my project car is getting closer to being back in one piece, I thought I would sign up to share experiences and help get some more recent insights from members on various topics -- what I mean by that, is sometimes I've found great information on sometime, but the thread might be 12 years old, and it's tough to know if anything has changed since that time. Like with tires (guess what my second post will be about!)

I've been into cars since I was a kid. I enjoy working on them... usually. I do as much maintenance and repairs as I can with my tools and knowledge, which is usually the basics - brakes, water pumps, sensors, oil/fluids, belts, etc. Professionally, most of my life has revolved around computers, usually with a cyber security slant of some kind.

I've lived in N.C. since 2007, before that living my whole life in the greater Chicago-land area (excluding a 1 year stint in Tampa).

Besides cars, my other hobbies involve collecting and shooting firearms, almost all things sci-fi, strength training, cooking, making ridiculously spicy salsa (I have a small garden and grow things like S.C. Reaper peppers, ghost peppers, 7 pot chocolate douglah, and tomatoes... because salsa).

"Why did you say (sort of) C5 in the title?" asked no one.
The shortest answer is my project car is being fitted with the complete suspension from a C5. We put the entire steering rack, cross member, suspension, etc in the front, and have worked out mounting points for the C5 upper and lower controls arms and tie rods in the back to keep proper geometry and no bump steer. Obviously we'll also be using the brakes. All of this was off a base model C5, though I did score a Z51 front sway bar for 50 bucks, and have already put that on the front.

I also picked up a set of really gorgeous 2001 Z06 Forgeline wheels (17x9.5 and 18x10.5) that we want to see if we can make fit. If not, I'll stick with the 17x8.5 and 18x9.5s that came with all the suspension parts I bought.

It's powered by an SBC (running AFR heads/forged internals) and will be getting an upgrade with a PT7675 Turbo charger. When it was NA, my best dyno run had it at 371 HP and 381 ft/lbs torque. Because it's a stock block (4 bolt mains) we're still going to take it easy on the boost. We're targeting the high 500s.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to let me know!

Welcome and best of luck with your project car. Since you are using a number of C5 parts in the car, I’d recommend you visit the C5 sections of the forum.

Hey I like all your hobbies! Sounds like quite a C5 project you have going there. It ought to be a terror when you're done. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes, everyone!

I'm still doing (re)Search on one of my core topics that I want to post about, so I can reference threads (mostly from here, because the same tire might behave differently on other cars). MrLeadFoot has done lots of posts on tires... lol

Also got some homework to do now about the steering rack, and some parts to hunt down. Firefox is not happy with the number of tabs I have open right now!
