I live in NJ, have an '01 C5 vert. Only mod is Corsa exhaust. I was thinking about long tube headers but most of the response from the forum was that I also need free-flow (or no) cats and an X-pipe to realize good HP gains. I'm ok with the X-pipe but am afraid of free-flow or high flow cats. My question is: Are there NJ guys with free-flow or high flow cats on their vettes? If so, what about passing emmissions inspection? If you have them and passed inspection, could you specify your set up (header brand, cat type/brand).
I have been looking into this lately. I talked to some NY guys that have LT Headers, X pipe and high flow cats and they all pass the inspection (they are local to NYC so they have the same test as the city - I believe each year they get tested).
Since you are in South Jersey, you might want to check with Brian or Doug at ECS and see if any other their customers have had any problems with emissions.
I also would use a private inspection station - maybe someone that you can become friendly with. I am not sure how much it would help, but couldn't hurt...
Hey N - I think he is looking for no Cats or high Flow Cats - your Z has stock Cats right?
you know us non-z people are just trying to catch your HP with the roof off of course....
Intrubl I believe has this setup and so does Alex. Where is that runt when you need him....
Nope, all aftermarket, from the motor on back. I did opt to keep the stock exhaust since it's quiet and light.
The Kooks come with 3" high-flo cats. I am running all 4 O2s, but plan on programming out the rear 2 since they throw codes every now and then. Running no cats is worth maybe 3 rwhp and tq.
Thanks for all the info! I'll start saving my money for tubes, cats, and x-pipe! One more question: Am I save to assume that once I start playing with the engine by adding long tubes, I can bet a Chevy dealer would no longer want to service my engine? If so, I'll start looking for a reliable shop somewhere in Morris County....I'm open to suggestions...

What is the difference in gains with LT when keeping the stock cats versus aftermarket high flow ones?
I heard around 20hp. I dyno'd at 338hp 347.1tq before my timing was bumped another 3 degrees to sqeeze another 2-3hpr out of her. I never got a base line, Chris seems to feel it was around 310 give or take.

I've had my car in for warranty stuff -- no problem. Don't be so scared dude What you should buy are either the LG or Kooks headers, both kits come with everything you need (cats, etc). But don't forget the tuning!!!! This is the most important piece as eamador11 mentioned NJ does OBDII testing. You need to have a good tune put in, and possibly have the rear O2s tuned out!! If not YOU WILL NOT PASS THE OBDII EMISSIONS TEST!
Figure about 1200-1400 for the headers another 100 or so for misc parts and about 400-600 to install and tune.

As Nabbs said warranty is not a problem. In order for them not to honor your warranty there needs to be a direct relationship between the MOD and the warranty claim. If you change to LT Headers they cannot say that a piston failed or altenator does not work because of the LT headers. They wioll though not touch anything that has been modded.
If you want great service and to be in and out in 1 day call ECS and ask them for a quote. Nabbs is right on with the pricing. I believe about $1800 for headers, high flow cats, and x-pipe installed and then another $400 for tuning.

I'm here!!!
Well technically, I'm due for emissions inspection in June, I got my header mods last september but my tuner said there shouldn't be any problem. IN NYC, they are now using the combined sniffer test and ODBC II test to check your computer for any bad codes. Don't know if Jersey is doing the same thing but if you do get the headers done, I would suggest getting a tune at the same time so that they can make sure your vette isn't running too lean or rich which could trigger a fault code and cause you problems on an ODBC test.
