Default Bear Mountain scouting report.

Well I didn't spend my whole weekend in church. Took a top off drive to Bear Mountain. The roads are clean and pot hole free. Found a real nice streach of road that should interest everyone. When you go to West Point you will take 9W north, you will pick it up right off of the rotary by the Bear Mountain bridge. West Point is only 5 minutes from there, be carful, you will go through some small towns, watch your speed. When you see the West Point exit go past it and continue on 9W north. Here is where it gets interesting, 9w turns into a 4 lane divided highway with a 55 mph speedlimit, there is a 7 mile streach of huge right hand and left hand sweepers that carve through the mountains that overlook the Hudson . (I can't believe I forgot about this road ) In the true spirit of fun runs, send someone ahead with a cell phone to make sure the run is clear . The run ends when the speed limit drops to 45 mph right at Angola rd. On the trip back there is 2 exits for West point, taking the second one gives you a little more time on 9W. Wish I could be there, have fun and be safe .

We weren't too far from one another.

I spent part of the day tooling around in Harriman with the top down.

What a beautiful day!!

Thanks so much Bob!!!

I think I know exactly what you're talking about from looking at the map. We'll definitely have to coordinate this just right but this road is gonna rock!!! I'll incorporate it into my preplanned route.

That's a good road -- also, is 218 open yet (or again)?

When you guys do a cruise like this, how do you comunicate while on the road? Cell phones, radio's? I can't make Bear Mountain next weekend, kid's sports conflict, but I would like to.

Clearly, I have a cell phone, but should I get some kind of CB/VHF?

We are going to use FRS radios (walkie talkies) to communicate the "fun zones" but for the most part, I have a predetermined route already set up where there are hardly any lights or traffic that can get in our way. We'll definitely do this again so keep an eye out for it.

Usually ALex is driving so Slow that we just pull alongside and yell at him!!

Or we converse for those 15 minutes he pauses on the side of the road to meet his next State Trooper.......

Is it my fault I'm a state trooper magnet? It's a curse I have to live with... along with oomp lumpa syndrome. Still, I have lots to be thankful for, at least I have hair.

Be careful on 9W when it widens to 4 lanes. LEO's sit on the overpass or on the side road (entrance) just to ruin your day. Also when you are coming down the mountain near Angola road they have a habit of sitting off to the side and flashing radar. I don't want to ruin your day but I wouldn't want your day ruined by them.
I'm going to try to make it but right now it is doubtful.
Good luck and enjoy the ride. Brunch is really great at the Thayer!

As I posted earlier -- why don't you do the 9W/218 loop? Never radar on 218.

Thanks for advice guys. I already have 9W/218 planned into the route. Didn't know about the radar traps further up though. Good to know. We'll look out for that.

Sorry, I forgot another spot. Northbound right out of Highland Falls there is a DPW yard before the Pointers Echo Motel. Lawman likes to hide there since you just came into a 55 MPH area and you are climbing. It feels great to really get into it but be careful.

Alex and FJB...are you guys doing Nabbs' cruise on the 24th? If so, we can talk about what kind of radio you use, or maybe you might have them.
