Default Garage Fantasy

We are thinking of building a house to retire to, and so while my loving wife works on the main house, I get to design my garage. The development has some restrictions on size, but I can have an oversized two bay garage, not a three bay, and I think I can be a few feet higher than stock, but not two stories high.

So...what should I be thinking of? I want room for a lift, tools, a bench, lots of light and some heat for the winter. I would like to learn how to do things like heads, cams, and the like, maybe even, as I learn, to rebuild engines. Ultimately, I would like to maybe have two Vettes, one to keep nice for Nabbs' and Alex's geriatric runs in the next decade, and the other would be a real fire breather to maybe race in classic racing.

So, please let me know what you think.

Mods, I couldn't think of where else to post this, since these guys are my friends and hang out here, so thanks for your indulgence.

If it was closer you should have a look at Rex Ruby's garage, it is as nice as you'll find.

Awesome, Rex. I might have to ask you for a tour. My niece goes to college in Philly, so I'm through there from time to time.

Thanks!!

I'm just finishing up a scratch built garage project I'd be happy to try and answer any questions you have, not that I know it all cause I don't, but I did learn an aweful lot along the way.

Township allowed a 24 X 24, had to get approval for the extra 6 feet.

How deep did you pour the concrete, and did you figure on a two post or four post lift? Did you just pour some extra inches of concrete, or did you feel that rebar was the way to go? How high did you go inside? I heard that you need about 14 1/2 feet inside to have your lift give you six feet under the Vette.

Concrete was a mono pour, footer, foundation and slab all one pour. It's a minumum of 6" and 12" on the lift side. The lift side also had 6 "piers" dug so I could go with a 2 or 4 post lift. No rebar, just wire. Inside is about 14' high

Make sure you install a good compressed air system. Have them route air lines around the garage and have access points to attach tools in a variety of locations!

Been thinking about a addition for the house. It would be 24x28 oversize 2-car garage with a room over. Just hoping it is big enough.

That's what I'm thinking of. An oversized two car, with room for tools and a bench, and also comfortable enough to use year round in Ct.

Well you know however big you build it it will never be big enough. You are going to want a lift do high ceilings are a must, so are insulation and heat if you are in a cold climate - and AC if its affordable

I just poured the foundation for a 24x32 garage. I will have 2 ten foot doors on the gable end. 18 feet of The back half will have a vaulted ceiling so I can have a lift in there. Is that enough?

I was contemplating radiant heat in the floor but I was talked out of it because I would probably drill in to a pipe when I put the lift in! Also I don't have access to water as it's far from the house and I am on a well for water. I will definitely have heat of some kind. Maybe a window A/C unit also if I can jam one in there when the future Mrs. EX isn't looking!

How much ceiling height do I need to raise the lift enough to work under the car? I will have 10 foot walls where the ceiling will start. I am using engineered trusses so I will have no columns in the way in the center of the garage space. It will have a 10 pitch roof.
