This afternoon, coming home, I ran over something on I 95, and the left rear went flat. H&L Chevy, the very good local dealer, sends all tire work to the local Town Fair Tire. I drove over there, they took the tire off, there is a 2" piece of metal all the way through the tread, and they have pronounced the tire unrepairable.
My car is a 2004 vert with about 25,000 fairly gentle miles. So, the question is, what to do.
Town Fair will sell me two new Eagles for the rear for about $425 each. I think Tire Rack will sell 4 new Michelin PS2 runflats for about $350 each, or $1400 for 4 new tires.
Are the PS2's that much better?
Also, the warrenty I got in the car when I bought it new says that if the tires are rendered unrepairable, Goodyear will do a mileage based pro-rata replacement.

Please let me know what you think, and thanks.
At 25k I think you can forget about getting any thing significant from that pro-rata replacement, but you can call and check it out. I would not mix and match brands of run flats, so if you go the Michelin route, get all 4. I don't like the C5 GY run flats, so personaly I would go with the Michelin. When mine go i will get something other then the C5 GY run flats. Good luck
I question the "not repairable" statement ....I've had screws and whatever
thru the tire, these new ones and the c5 ones, and a patch from the inside always worked.

I would question a "patch" on anything that is this fast. A blow out sucks at 55, never mind possible higher speeds one might encounter, not that I'm advocating speeding or anything.

I thought the only "not repairable" would be a sidewall puncture (notwithstanding a gaping hole in the tread).
Even the DIY plugs I have done have held up great for my EMTs!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't really think you can get a "blowout" with a EMT tire?
There is a 2" gash right through the tread...all the way through. So, Im getting new tires. I talked with our local speed shop, and he suggests non-run flats with flat tire kit, just like the ZO6's.
So, if I get non run flats, do the pressure sensors still work? I'm sure the ride and noise will be much better.

I think the fact that the tire survived the gash, it was worth the peace of mind to replace them with the same runflats. However, this could be an opportunity to go for some bling!! new rims/tires
The pressure sensors will work regardless of tire type.

The sensors will work with any tire, runflat or not. BTW, I had the PS2s for a short while and I liked them. Very quiet although in turns, they tend to be a bit less tight, mostly because of the runflats hard sidewalls which gives you better tight turning radius versus a soft tire like the PS2s.
BTW, keep in mind that if you did get a set of stock runflats, they would probably be quieter than the tires you're getting rid of simply because as goodyear runflats age and get worn out, they tend to get louder. Brand new stock runflats will be quieter than those that have 25,000 miles.
So basically, it comes down to whether you're willing to trade the safety of runflats vs. the comfort of nonrunflats. The ride will definitely be significantly softer and smoother with nonrunflats.
