M = Motorcycle
SA = Auto
So I have an M95 (1995 standard) that I have for sale, too big for you though, that is acceptable for Drag strips but not for road courses.
Road courses will require and SA helmet.
If yo are buying now, the latest standard is 00 for 2000. An M00 if you only drag race will save you about $100. You have to ask if you want to save the $100 or feel safer with a helmet built for Autos and get the SA.
Now you have to decide on style. Open face is better for drag racing cause it is cooler and you have to drive with the windows closed. Closed face is better for road racing becasue you have to drive with the windows open.
Then there is color, basic black or whit or do you want fancy colors like on the motorcycle helmets.
Then brand is your next decision. Every one knows Simpson. That will cost you. The more familiar the brand, the safer you will feel but not necssarily be.
I think this covers the basic questions and points to consider to begin with.
I now use a G-Force, Black, Full Face SA00 helmet that I bought from about $230 because I drive on road courses as well as drag racing.
Try not to make the same mistake I did. If you think you will ever need an SA helmet, do not buy a M rated helmet cause you will be stuck with it.
I bought mine from http://www.racerwholesale.com
If you want, I can bring my helmet on the 22nd if you want to give it another try.
Let me know if you have further questions.
