I really want to make it to Carlisle in August, and I’m about 75% sure that I might have a place to leave my kids for the weekend so that my wife and I can take the Corvette there.
Here is my dilemma: If the babysitter falls through, is it still worthwhile to load up the family and (God forgive me) go with my Mini-Van?
The alternative is the GTO regionals in NJ that weekend. The dates are the same. I could fit my wife and two kids in the 68 GTO and head for this event, but I’ve been to it already and would much rather go to Carlisle.
The GTO event is held at a Hotel, and is very “kid friendly.” Would the accommodations and event at Carlisle be “kid friendly” also?
I just want to have a “Plan B” in case I have to take the kids.
Taking the wife and kids to Carlisle should be considered abusive. Were you never a kid once? Spend a few long hot or rainy days walking around and looking at greasy car parts? You have to go to your kids' events. They don't have to go to yours.
(Look, Billy and Jane! Look what I found! [After hours of trudging around and looking through boxes of crap.] A gunkulator! What luck! And only the price of your first year at college! [You can go to the community college for a year.] These gunkulators only fit mid-November to late-April '83s with the XYZ option. But, of course, you knew that. Let's spend 12 hours tomorrow looking for magnesium muffler bearings. What fun! It doesn't get any better than this! And you wanted to go to the beach or Six Flags.)

More fun in a Vette but you certainly can bring the family. It is an awful lot of walking and might be a bit difficult for real young kids. It's also hot and humid there in August. Lots of vendors selling Corvette oriented parts and everything else under the sun. Lots of Vettes for sale too. Have fun.

I was there last year and it was soo hot and humid and they had the burnout contest going on which filled the whole fairgrounds with the smoke and smell of burnt rubber. Yeah, it just doesn't get any better than this !

The kids will be good for a few hours but after that........
You can leave at anytime.... Or take a *time-out* up in the grandstands.
At other Carlisle events - I've seen people sleeping up in the grandstands. Or I've seen families gathered up there having little picnics just to get away from the crowds and noise.
Parking for spectators has gotta be a nightmare though.... I think everyone who lives in that immediate area sells their front lawns for parking.

I parked right across the street from Gate 3 last year for $10!! When I left many hours later, the woman's sign said $20; I guess she figured out how prime her back yard was!
If you do take the Vette, try and join a bunch of us from L.I. who leave early Fri. AM, meeting right in your backyard at Starbucks on rte 110 Farmingdale. Check Ed,s (Mowton) posts as we get closer.
Honestly? take the minivan, there will thousands of vettes there, I'm sure one more vette will not make a diff...........the only thing will probably be a killer is the drive in a minivan
Hershey Park
Hershey chocolate "factory" ride (right beside the park)
Strasburg railroad - great museum with locomotives and a nice little ride on a real steam-driven train
Visit an Amish or Menonite farm in Lancaster County
Check the concert schedule for Harrisburg's City Island
A trip over to Gettysburg
Shopping at the outlets in York
Lots of things to do when the kids get bored of walking around all the car parts.

Thanks! I checked out the thread and if my wife and I make the trip I’ll definitely join in the caravan and probably book the Holiday Inn (C6) package too.
