Anyone have issues with tolls not reading your windshield device?
In the last month I have noticed that mine has not been read on the Philly bridges the NJ Turnpike, ACX and GSP. I haven't had an issue as they told me that they have a secondary system that just uses your plate to record the toll. They said that it could be the windshield of the car, but I didn't have the problem in the past.
Question #2: They are sending me a front plate device. Will it fit under the front plate cover? As I currently have my front plate on, but covered up with the nose piece. (Can't get pass the horrible look of a front plate on a C5, but keep the plate on underneath in case I get pulled over - use the old at a car show and forgot to take it off excuse.)
Install the front plate tag under the hood, it will read through the fiberglass.
Have it that way on both of mine, nice and stealth
I do this as well - a tip I learned from England Green who posted a picture of it some time ago in a thread. But sometimes the toll booth will not read it and display a "Call EZPass" message. I guess some toll booths are not as sensitive as others. Happens a lot on the NYS Thruway as it did yesterday coming home from OCC. But no big deal - as long as you have your plate registered to match the tag, it will hit your account a day or so later for whatever the right dollar amount is. I've never gotten a toll evasion notice from when it didn't read the tag.

Yeah, I was continuing to get money withdrawn from my account so I assumed it was still being paid. And the license plate read was exactly what they were doing.

The EG recommended mount is on the HVAC air intake grill directly in front of the driver's side base of the winshield. Lay the unit flat on its back with the "up" arrow pointing to the rear of the car. Velcro will hold it just fine.
That said, I tried this and got a lot of no-read situations. Went back to the windshield unit which never gave me any trouble. Your mileage may vary, so to speak, so give it a try.
Mine is a windshield mount unit that I placed behind by license plate filler on my C4 and I haven't had any problems with it.
I have another windshield mount unit that I also mounted behind the front license plate filler on my C5 but haven't gone through a toll with it yet - I will be using it later this week so I hope it works OK.
(It is much closer to the ground on the C5 than C4)

Just a thought……how old is your EZ Pass transponder? I was told by the EZ Pass people here in Maryland that there is a battery in the transponder that wears out after a certain period of time. Mine was starting to not read all the time and I traded it in for a new one and have not had any more issues.

Didn't realize that. Probably been about 2.5 - 3 years.
I think mine was about 3 ½ or 4 years old and the woman at the EZ Pass office couldn’t believe it had lasted that long. That could be your problem if it had been working well and recently started to malfunction.

Sorry you folks are having problems with the "under the hood" mod. EZPass (exterior unit) worked like a dream for me in NY/NJ/PA - and it works in Florida with SunPass.

No from what I remember, it switches from ez pass to the sunshine pass,
and battery transponders do go bad, good time to get the tag version. I mounted mine under the front plate cover, but no front tags in pa

Charlie , I sometimes have a problem when I ride me cycle with EZ pass in my jacket pocket , I slow down and aim it @ the reader and it still tells me the toll is not paid . Mine is about as old as yours though .

Funny when I first got it, it worked just about anywhere I put it....center console, trunk, glove box, etc. I would try to hide it when on business trips as it was easier to just pay cash and get a receipt, but I was told by a toll booth worker that you had to wrap it in tinfoil to block the transmission (they were picking up the signal no matter where I hid it). Battery excuse then sounds logical. I'll try mounting the plate one under the nose cover. If that doesn't work I'll try EG's suggestion (thanks EG). I'll let you guys know how it works. Heck I'll get a good test run up to Carlilse on Sat if it comes by then. In that trip I'll possibly hit the NJ and PA Turnpikes, the GSP, ACX and also one of the Del. River Bridges....depending on how I go.
